The latest book by the eminent Swiss Chopin scholar Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger follows the line of research into the socio-cultural context of Chopin’s work that he has been pursuing for many years. After the thorough exploration of Chopin’s work as a piano teacher and the specific milieu of his pupils presented in the pioneering monograph Chopin: Pianist and Teacher in the Eyes of his Pupils, Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger has taken up the absorbing subject of Chopin’s links with Parisian salon life. He has shown those links in two dimensions: on one hand, as Chopin’s contribution to the life of those salons in which he came to be active; on the other, as the reception of his performances within that milieu, combined with an evaluation of his playing style, the appraisals of which occasionally assume a refined literary form.

Prof. Zbigniew Skowron
