The autograph manuscript of the Mazurka, Op. 59 No. 3 is held in The Mary Flagler Cary Music Collection at Morgan Library & Museum in New York. The manuscript of this composition, completed in 1845, is an example of a ‘rejected official manuscript’. The meticulous notation indicates that Chopin originally intended to send it to a third party, but for some reason he failed to do so.
The Mazurka, Op. 59 No. 3 published here represents a rare case in the composer’s output where the original concept for a work is in a different key than the published version: the autograph manuscript contains the composition notated in the key of G minor, a semitone higher than the final version.
This volume includes a source commentary by Professor Jeffrey Kallberg.
