We hereby invite you to read the scholarly book published by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, entitled Bach and Chopin. Baroque Traditions in the Music of the Romantics, edited by Szymon Paczkowski. This publication contains selected and expanded articles produced in the wake of the international academic conference Baroque Traditions in the Music of the Romantics during the First Half of the Nineteenth Century, organised in 2017 by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in collaboration with the Institute of Musicology of the University of Warsaw.
Devoted to the Romantic reception of the Baroque, the articles are orientated primarily towards Bach, although the adopted perspectives and approaches are highly universal. Discussed from a range of angles are such themes as Bach and Chopin, Bach in nineteenth-century violin music, the reception of Bach in Paris, Bach and Schumann, and Bach and Schubert.

From the Editor

‘We believe that this volume is truly a collective work on the Romantic reception of the Baroque – mainly oriented towards Bach. We trust, however, that the perspective and way(s) of looking at this topic are nevertheless highly versatile and definitely not German-centric. To this end, subjects such as Bach and Chopin, Bach and nineteenth-century violin virtuosity, and the reception of Bach in Paris, are balanced with topics more typical of Bach research, e.g. Bach and Schumann, Bach and Schubert, early nineteenth-century editions of Bach’s music etc. and discussed within a variety of formulations and frameworks.’
